Sustainable & Healthy Kitchens

A kitchen should be more than a place to cook. It should be a healthy, tactile and nourishing space that supports your wellbeing, respects the environment, and stands the test of time.
At The Natural Craftsman, I design and build kitchens using responsible materials, traditional techniques, and modern performance, with a focus on health, durability and natural beauty.

Better Materials, Better Living

Most conventional kitchens on the market are made from toxic particle boards, plastic laminates and synthetic finishes that can off-gas VOCs for years and end up in landfill after 5–10 years of use.

I take a different approach.

I prioritise:

  • Solid wood & responsibly sourced timber

  • Natural oils, waxes and low-VOC finishes

  • High-quality joinery hardware that lasts decades

  • Recycled or recyclable materials where appropriate

Where sheet goods are needed, I specify low-formaldehyde, FSC-certified boards or natural fibre alternatives, reducing hidden toxins and improving indoor air quality.

The result is a kitchen that feels more like furniture than flatpack.

Durability Through Craftsmanship

A sustainable kitchen isn’t just about materials, it’s about longevity. I build cabinetry using robust construction methods: strong carcasses and high-performance hardware (mortise & tenon, dovetails are optional depending the budget).

This creates kitchens designed to last decades, not seasons and so, lower the environmental footprint.

Healthy For You, Not Just The Planet

Indoor air quality matters, and kitchens are a major source of chemical exposure due to adhesives, paints and finishes.

By using natural, low-toxicity finishes, I avoid:

  • Harsh solvents

  • VOC-heavy lacquers

  • Synthetic adhesives where alternatives exist

This reduces:

  • Headaches

  • Odours

  • Allergens

  • Long-term exposure risks

A healthier kitchen means a healthier home for your family.

Built for Modern Living

Eco-friendly doesn’t mean rustic or basic.

I combine natural materials with:

  • Soft-close hardware

  • Precision-built drawers and carcasses

  • Integrated appliances

  • Thoughtful ergonomics and storage

  • Durable worktops to suit your lifestyle

  • And you if you want to paint the wood, I’m very happy to bring colours to my projects.

Whether you want a minimal, modern look or a warm, handcrafted aesthetic, sustainable design adapts to you.

Local, Responsible Sourcing

I source timber and materials from local suppliers where possible, using ethical British sawmills and it always comes from Certified sustainable forests

This supports:

  • Lower carbon footprint

  • Local craft economy

  • Higher material traceability

You know where your wood came from, and how it was treated.

Custom Designs, Handcrafted For You

No two kitchens are the same. Every project is designed around your:

  • Space

  • Routine

  • Storage needs

  • Style

  • Budget

I can work from your ideas, sketches, or create a full design and build package, including layout, cabinetry, and installation.

A Kitchen You’ll Want to Live In

A sustainable kitchen isn’t just an eco-choice, it's a lifestyle choice. It’s warm, natural, durable, repairable and tactile.

It ages with grace, tells a story and becomes part of your home, not landfill.

My Commitment

I build kitchens with integrity, transparency, responsible sourcing and craftsmanship that lasts.

I don’t do disposable joinery, toxic finished and I don’t cut corners. Just honest materials, thoughtful design, and quality that endures.
